Organic Growers School Farmer Programs Assistant
Based in: western North Carolina with outreach to eastern Tennessee
The Organic Growers School is a 501c3 non profit organization that seeks to support sustainable agriculture in the Southern Appalachians through educational programs and outreach.

The Organic Growers School invites applicants for a Farmer Programs Assistant who will report to the organization’s Director. Specific responsibilities include:
- Organize and carry out Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) events in WNC and TN. Attend all tours in Western North Carolina and in Tennessee.
- Facilitate communication within client member groups via internet and social media.
- Explore video, photo and other visual media to promote farmer education.
- Collect and compile program evaluations
- Continue outreach efforts to increase presence and familiarity with OGS’ Farmers Programs in the region
- Maintain OGS contacts with farm partners and recruit new farmer members.
- Monitor OGS Farmer Programs website
- Perform administrative, marketing and other support duties.
- Solicit sponsors and other funding to sustain OGS farmer programming in accordance with OGS fundraising priorities.
We are particularly eager to find organized, hard-working candidates who possess the following skills/experience
- Enthusiastic self-starter with an eye for problem solving and good follow-through
- strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
- knowledge pertaining to organic and/or sustainable agriculture businesses
- knowledge pertaining to existing regional agriculture education
- fundraising and event experience
- ability to work both independently and in teams
Work will be contracted, from home, part time (10-20 hours/week estimate), and compensated at a rate comparable to $12-$15 hourly . Funding for this position exists for 2 years beginning in 2012, and comes from a USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program Grant. There exists the potential for longer term employment after the initial two years of funding.
